In my opinion, people who accept criticism are more likely to be successful in their teams. I will elaborate as follows.

First, accepting criticisms can improve oneself. People have a chance to seriously reflect on their mistakes and flaws when considering others’ criticisms. Then, they can fix their disadvantages by referring to these criticisms. For example, my uncle is a white-collar in a company. Second, existing one member who refuses to take criticisms decreases the working efficiency of the team. Some group tasks or projects need members to unite as a whole and sustain similar goals. However, if one cannot objectively accept criticism and suggestions, other members have to stop and try to persuade him/her. One time a team member, Joe, was so offended, since we did not take his idea with some infeasibility, that he refused to help us finish the assignment. The teacher then failed Joe for not participating. What is even worse, if you cannot take criticism well, then nobody will want to work with you. For another project, our teacher let us pick our own teams. Nobody wanted to work with Joe. Imagine if that was the real world? How can such a person survive in competitive society.

Last but not least, one’s resentment towards criticism may earn him a reputation of being defensive, even let him be isolated from the rest of the group. Those who frequently reject others’ criticisms tend to show an air of complacency, arrogance, even rudeness. Thus, other members in the team must feel uncomfortable to work with such people and will not cooperate with them, even kick them out. For instance, he would not be invited to important meetings because the team wants to avoid conflicts with him. Also, when he has difficulties doing some task, his colleagues may not be willing to offer help. Without the support from coworkers or the management, a person can find the job neither enjoyable nor promising.

In most situations, people express criticism just to share what they think about a matter and to solve a problem. Never should we assume that such criticism is personal attack. Instead, we had better listen to why a person holds criticism towards us and then communicate with this person. In a word, an poor/rejecting attitude towards criticism stops people from improving themselves and enjoying a harmonious relationship with colleagues. The clearest message that the researchers get form the 75-year study is this: Good relationships keep us happier and healthier. As an illustration, in China, due to family planning, the single-child family generally lack the awareness to teach the offspring to help others instead of meeting their needs as more as possible.
